Fandom Vid/Character pairings: Doctor Who, BTVS, OUAT, & GoT Character/Vid pairings Part II

I rather enjoyed doing that last post and apparently I have time on my hands. One of the side-effects of being laid up with a broken foot - is you do have a lot of time on your hands.

An aside on vids - I can't do them myself, so I'm relying on people who have created their own and posted to You Tube, the vid usually states who it is by. Also the trick of a good vid and music match-up is to catch the essence of a character or match-up that explains to someone else what you loved or see in them. What pricked your interest.

All of the below vids have spoilers. I have them arranged by tv series/fandom:

1. Doctor Who

I've the perfect song for Doctor Who and River Song pairing..."Time After Time by Cyndie Lauper" - although I prefer a different version of the song.

10th Doctor Who - "It's My Life" - I liked this video best and the song has a nice ironic twist for this lyric: "It's my Life, it's now or never, I'm not going to live forever..."
But it has the joi de vivre of the companions that join the doctor. Or expresses why they do it.

2) Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Series

* Xander Harris - I don't know what the song is here, but it actually works, and this is the only vid I could find that fit him and the only song...

What I loved most about Xander was his quips. The character made me laugh. Whedon infused Xander with his quippy self-deprecating charm.

Weirdly there's more Xander/Buffy, Xander/Giles (really? okaay. I get Xander/Spike and even Xander/Angel, but Xander/Giles??), Xander/Dawn (doesn't work for me...but to each their own),
Xander/ Willow (now that one I actually shipped briefly), Xander/Anya...

I find one for Xander/Cordy that I think works better for Xander/Anya - "The Story of US"

* Darla - found the following intense vid to "Sea Lion Woman" by Fiest:

This works so well, with the words and the rhythm - it has that teasing deceptiveness that was at the heart of Darla. When I heard the song - I admittedly thought, Darla.

* Angelus - to the song "Dragula by Rob Zombie":

* And oh dear, someone actually did a Fanged Four vid to Lady Gaga's Bad Romance - that's too perfect:

* Spike and Angel to "They Can't Take That Away From Me"...and if you are like me you may well mistake the line..."we may never meet again on the bumpy road of life" to "we may never meet again on the buffy road of life."

3. Game of Thrones:

The following are vids for Jamie Lannister, which are quite good and contain spoilers through S3 of the television series. But no book spoilers.

*

The song is ironic particularly in how the vid pairs with it. Works brilliantly.

*

And finally You Won't Forget My Name

*

I'm clearly a fan of tortured characters.

Here's a Tyrion Lannister vid - and the only one I could find with a song...and it is fittingly to The Raines of Castamere.

Weirdly I think the song fits Tyrion better, due to the heightened irony.

And here's Ayra:

5) OUAT

All of these vids have major plot spoilers through S2. Nothing past S2.

* Emma/Neal - this does have spoilers for S2:

Emma

This is a good video and song pairing for Regina to Let it Rock:

Finally found a decent and not too sappy Henry+Emma video...that fits how I see their relationship to I'll Save the World

I like this vid, because it is a tad subversive gender wise.

Finally...the sexy ones:

* Hook to the song For Your Entertainment

Fitting, because he literally is there for our entertainment.

*Rumplestilskin to the song "Remedy" - the lyrics quite fit the tortured soul that is Rumple:

And two interesting takes on the Cora/Rumple relationship, the first to the song "Tragedy" and the second to the Lady Gaga Song Love Game, which is just a tad racy.
Both of these have spoilers galore for season 2.

a)

b)

Both get across their twisted and tragic relationship.

Some of those are absolutely wonderful.

I love the Darla one.
Thanks.

Agreed, the Darla one blew me away - it really captures everything about the character or what attracted me to her perfectly. Took a while to find it. There aren't many.
That Darla vid \o/ WOW

Some of the difficulty in finding vids for Buffy / Angel, I think, is that they're often not labeled with fandom / character names. E.g.

I'm surprised no one decided Little Lion Man for Wesley. Though TBH, it also fits Eleven quite well.

There's probably an Angel vid to Mad World lurking out there somewhere...
Yeah the Darla vid blew me away as well. One of the best character centric vids I've seen.

And wow on that Buffy vid..."I want to be a bottled blond" - that one is perfect. Another very good character centric vid. Which plays with the themes and why people identified so closely with the character and series.

I rather like the other two as well...

You're right one of the problems is they don't identify them by character names. Finding appropriate character center Angel, Buffy, Xander, Willow vids was hard. Spike is easy due to his popularity amongst vidders - Spike and Doctor Who 10 have an insane number of vids, as do the ships, Spike/Buffy, Angel/Buffy, and Xander/Cordelia.
You can tell who vidders on Youtube liked. Also way too many songs like Wild Horses.

I went nuts hunting ones for Game of Thrones - too many were merely clips from the series, had similar problems with OUAT.
While weirdly Buffy, Angel, and Doctor Who were easier to find music too, but impossible to find clips from the series on. May be due to when the series is on television? Now people have figured out how to download clips with dialogue intact, back then it was harder to do it.

If you find an Angel vid to Mad World let me know.

The other problem is you get perfect song, but the vid itself is too dark or choppy - the Fanged Four to Bad Romance, perfect song but vid feels a bit choppy and off.

I really like the ones you posted, Buffy, Dawn and Wes - all three are clean vids and aren't dark.
I've seen approximately 2 Willow vids in all my time stalking YT vidders. Buffy probably has quite a few, but she's the one who's almost never identified by name, since YT seems to jump on named vids with copyright.

I'm surprised Cordelia/Xander has so many vids to it. A/B, S/B and C/A seem to be the most popular, and some Lilah/Wesley and Fred/Wesley exists too, though most of them are older. I think Ten and Eleven might have a similar number of vids? Doctor/Rose is still by far the most popular DW vid pairing, but Doctor/River and Amy/Rory are catching up, since YT is becoming more and more popular for fanvid hosting. Though I still haven't found a Doctor/River vid to For Blue Skies, which shook my faith in fandom.

I know DW is hard to find clips on because BBC is insane about stomping on copyrighted material. Not sure about Buffy and Angel, though.

Lol. You bringing me up sent me on a search across the interwebs. So far, I haven't come up with anything.

Lol. I almost always watch ship vids, or vids with songs I know, so this doesn't happen too often with me. Unfortunately, it usually means all the vids I watch are to only a couple of shows.

I really like the ones you posted, Buffy, Dawn and Wes - all three are clean vids and aren't dark.

All three are also by the same vidder. There are some brilliant ones on YT.

ETA: Oh yes, I also meant to ask, your other post made it sound like you don't really tend to get into fanvids that often?

Oh yes, I also meant to ask, your other post made it sound like you don't really tend to get into fanvids that often?

Yes, rarely.

It has a lot to do with computer issues. In the late 1990s and early 00s, downloading vids crashed my hard-drive or killed my computer.
Also when I had dial-up...it was a nightmare. So I eventually gave up.

Later, when it became easier - the better vids required joining file sharing programs for a fee (just no) or going through a lot of techie stuff (again no). They just weren't accessible to people who didn't want to clutter up their hard-drives with downloads, crash their computers,or go through a bunch of tech obstacles.

And I've found it hard on my eyes to watch vids on my computer. They tend to be dark and harder to see, with the glare, and often choppy.

Plus? Prior to the last two years - I read and looked at a lot of fan stuff during my lunch breaks at work. You can't watch vids at work and still want to keep your job. The other stuff is hard enough. Now all those sites are blocked, so just see them at home - and time is more limited.

So really the mechanics have turned me off of it. I'd rather read meta or fanfic, easier to access on multiple levels.

Ah, I see. I had dial-up until the end of last year, but (unfortunately?) for me I got hooked on vids once I upgraded.

Controversial or Ships that aren't as embraced by the core of fandom seem to have less vids. I noticed that.
Hm, that's interesting about Eleven/River, since I always got the impression that it was quite popular too.

Oh it is...but only in a small faction of the fandom. There's a lot of haters. I've run into quite a few on my flist who do not like the ship and find it offensive. Granted that is true to an extent with all ships.

The River/Doctor and Rose/Doctor folks don't quite see eye-to-eye, reminds me a little of the Spike/Buffy and Angel/Buffy folks fights. Actually their fights are remarkably similar. As are the Moffat vs. RT Davies fights. Rose/Doctor don't tend to like Moffat, and Doctor/River are ambivalent about RT Davies. Which is interesting. Then there's the people who don't fit either...and are sort of annoyed with both and wish everyone shipped Donna/Doctor, yet refuse to admit they are shippers (which reminds me of the confessed non-Buffy shippers in the Buffy fandom, who shipped over characters and pairings and felt marginalized).

Sigh, doesn't matter the fandom, people are the same.

From what I've seen of my f'list, and my own tastes, this is true. I certainly fall into those patterns.
Fallen into the same one's myself. But, I was less invested in Doctor Who than Buffy...so less upset by it. I barely watched the Rose/Doctor arc, and only get interested when Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead aired. Prior to those two episodes, I kept trying to figure out the appeal of the series. And until I saw Children of the Earth, Family of Blood, and the episodes following it, didn't get the appeal of Davies.

Buffy in stark contrast? I watched from the moment it aired, got momentarily obsessive with Angel/Buffy, particularly when he turned into Angelus, and loved S2 to pieces, but didn't get into the fandom really until Spike/Buffy hit the scene in 2002. Although it admittedly wasn't just Spike/Buffy that intrigued me as the fact that the writers were throwing all six of their characters off the cliff - and tv series just didn't do that.

I'm surprised Cordelia/Xander has so many vids to it.

So was I. And they are oddly better than the Anya/Xander ones. I was hunting Xander vids and could barely find any. Most were overly sentimental. I don't like overly sentimental vids...particularly not in association with Xander.

YT seems to jump on named vids with copyright.

Weird considering the number of Game of Thrones and Once Upon A Time vids that are actual segments from the series. They aren't vids. They are actual scenes. That is actually copyright infringement. More so than vids are. Maybe the copyright owners don't care? It really does depend on the owner.
Under copyright law - you sort of have to police it yourself or go after it yourself. No one does it for you.

I know DW is hard to find clips on because BBC is insane about stomping on copyrighted material. Not sure about Buffy and Angel, though.

Fox really began to police and crack down on sites around 2003/2004 for Buffy/Angel. They didn't get insane about it until 2005 or thereabouts. I think it took them a while to figure out the internet and how it was impinging on their copyright. I've noticed some copyright owners get more obsessive about copyright after a show is no longer on the air or readily available.

Though I still haven't found a Doctor/River vid to For Blue Skies, which shook my faith in fandom.

I just looked, they have Doctor/Amy and Doctor/Rose. The Doctor/River shippers, like myself, are sort of in the minority apparently, because River wasn't a companion and a controversial character. (ie. not the traditional female sidekick).

Controversial or Ships that aren't as embraced by the core of fandom seem to have less vids. I noticed that.
